HOW TO ANSWER THE TWO MOST COMMON INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Navigating the interview process can be daunting for those actively seeking a job. The pressure to make a strong impression is immense, especially when applying for higher-level positions. I completely understand this feeling—I felt the same way when I started my career. However, with practice and a boost in self-confidence, you can turn those nerves into an advantage. Building on my previous post about the nerve-wracking nature of interviews and the importance of preparation, today I want to focus on two common interview questions you’re likely to encounter, and some strategies to keep in mind when answering these questions in your next interview.
Tell me about yourself and your past experiences.
This question is typically asked at the beginning of an interview and sets the tone for the rest of the conversation. That’s why it’s crucial to have a well-structured response ready so you don’t go off on a tangent! Aim for a direct answer that lasts no longer than two minutes. Your response should effectively summarize your professional background, including key experiences, accomplishments, and education.
Why do you want to work here?
I like to ask this question because it encourages the interviewee to pause and reflect on their answer. To respond effectively, you need to understand your genuine “why” behind applying for the role. Knowing your “why” will set you apart from other candidates and will help you express your passion for the position. This is essential, especially when pursuing jobs that genuinely excite you and will advance your career. When answering this question, make sure to incorporate the company’s mission and values that resonate with you. This demonstrates your genuine interest in the company and shows how your career aspirations align with their goals.
Ultimately, being authentic in your responses is crucial. The more you prepare your responses in advance, the more confident you’ll feel during the interview. It’s important to answer these questions sincerely, as your honesty can significantly influence how hiring managers perceive you.
