HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ENERGY

Protecting your energy at work isn’t something we talk about enough.

It’s so easy to get caught in the hustle — the meetings, the deadlines, the constant “go, go, go” energy. But here’s the truth: that pace isn’t sustainable. Burnout is real. And if we don’t take the time to protect and recharge our energy, we end up running on empty.

Protecting your energy is about knowing when to draw the line, setting boundaries, and being intentional with where you spend your emotional and mental energy.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is the power of setting clear boundaries — and actually sticking to them. Whether it’s not answering emails after 5 PM, saying no to that extra project, or taking a quiet lunch break away from your desk — it matters. Boundaries are an act of self-respect. Be honest with yourself about how much you can take on, and be transparent with your manager. A good leader will not only respect your bandwidth — they’ll ask how they can support you.

You can’t pour from an empty cup — and the best thing you can offer your team or your work is a clear, focused version of yourself.

I’ve also realized how powerful it is to surround yourself with positive energy. Energy is contagious — and if you’re constantly around stress, gossip, or negativity, it’ll weigh you down. My advice? Stay out of the office drama. You’re there to do your best work, not talk about what someone wore to the last team meeting. Connect with people who lift you up, who inspire you, who feel safe and supportive. That applies to your personal life, too. If someone feels draining or off, it’s okay to protect your peace and create some distance.

Unplugging is another big one. We live in a hyper-connected world, and it’s easy to blur the line between work and life — especially when your phone is always within reach. But you’re allowed to disconnect. You deserve to disconnect. It’s okay to close your laptop, turn off notifications, and be unavailable. Rest is productive. Quiet time is powerful. You’ll return clearer and stronger when you give yourself space to breathe.

And lastly — listen to your body. Tune into how you’re really feeling. If you’re drained, don’t push through just for the sake of it. Rest, reset, and come back when you feel grounded again. Slowing down doesn’t mean falling behind — it means you’re taking care of yourself so you can show up fully when it counts.

Protecting your energy at work isn’t about doing less — it’s about doing what matters with intention. When you prioritize your well-being, you show up as your best self — and that is the most powerful thing you can do.
